God dwells in us through his Holy Spirit, as the Apostle Paul affirms in his letter to the Romans, « the Spirit makes you God’s children, and by the Spirit’s power we cry out to God, Father! My Father! ». Romans 8:15.
Pope Francis teaches us that we receive this Spirit permanently as a living water that springs up and gives life.
“The Holy Spirit is the inexhaustible source of God’s life in us. Man of every time and place desires a full and beautiful life, just and good, a life that is not threatened by death, but can still mature and grow to fullness. Man is like a walker who, crossing the deserts of life, thirsts for the living water: gushing and fresh, capable of quenching his deep desire for light, love, beauty and peace.
Jesus promised the Samaritan woman that he will give a superabundance of living water forever to all those who recognize him as the Son sent by the Father to save us. Jesus came to give us this living water, who is the Holy Spirit that our life might be guided by God, might be moved by God, nourished by God. When we say that a Christian is a spiritual being we mean just this: the Christian is a person who thinks and acts in accordance with God, in accordance with the Holy Spirit”.
To open her heart and welcome this Spirit who gives life and guides the soul, Eugénie Caps gave this advice to her friend Catherine Frentz,
“Renounce yourself, think only of Jesus’ benefit. He will attend to yours! Find also shelter with Mary’s holy heart and may the Holy Spirit enlighten you and lead you!”. Cf. Letters of Sister Eugénie Caps to Catherine Frentz, Spiritan Collection n°2, page 21.
Lord, grant us the grace to let ourselves be totally guided by your Holy Spirit, to think and act like you.
